CULTURE NEWS

  • An old newspaper article revealed that in the late 1860s a wooden covered bridge spanned Deep River at Jamestown and a nearby gristmill added to the town's activity—an unusual tale told that circus elephants once swam the deep water when they refused to cross the bridge. The bridge washed away around 1870 and was replaced by an open structure.  YES! Weekly
