COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the High Points Arts Council hosts Art on Tap at Centennial Station Arts Center from 6 to 8 p.m.—the Triad also will have free events including live music, a family movie night, and festivals like Aggie FanFest, Fall Fest, Aggies on Elm, and a Boo Bash Carnival later this week. Residents can enjoy a variety of activities in High Point, Greensboro, and Jamestown as the busy week unfolds.  YES! Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Guilford County officials are updating their Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce risks from natural and man-made disasters—this plan will help secure FEMA funding as planned actions are refined based on resident input from surveys and meetings.  YES! Weekly
  • High Point has received a federal grant to fund 24 new firefighter positions—this funding will boost the city’s fire department capacity as it prepares to fill the roles.  The High Point Enterprise
  • The North Carolina Public Safety Act will implement three new domestic violence measures on December 1 that make habitual abuse a felony and require offenders to surrender their guns—these protections will extend to victims both in and out of state. Local advocate Portia Shipman, a survivor who runs the Paint the City Purple initiative, said the law is a positive step to help prevent further abuse.  WXII 12
  • Guilford County Board of Elections announced on Oct. 8 that a recount will review votes for Greensboro City Council candidates T. Dianne Bellamy-Small and Carla Franklin, who received 9.35% and 9.26% of the vote. The recount—scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the lower ground level of the New Guilford County Courthouse—will recheck the primary election results.  WFMY News 2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Elsie Best, an 88-year-old two-time breast cancer survivor in the Triad, stays positive after long treatments—she raises funds and spreads awareness for the American Cancer Society. She urges everyone to care for their health by looking their best so they can keep fighting for life.  WXII 12
  • The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will cancel the rules that let people get COVID-19 shots in pharmacies because the CDC now says a prescription is not needed. The change will start on Oct. 13 as pharmacies—insurers and vaccine programs adjust to the update.  WXII 12
