  • High Point police will host their annual Community Day on Saturday where FBI supervisory agent Seth Fleitman will assist 12-year-old Mason Isaacson & help him try on an FBI vest during the event.  The High Point Enterprise
  • Guilford County Animal Services—partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation—is hosting the Empty the Shelters adoption event from Oct 1 until Oct 15 to offer reduced fees of $65 for adult cats and kittens, $55 for adult dogs and puppies, and $10 for senior animals at the Animal Resource Center on 980 Guilford College Rd in Greensboro, where the center is open daily from 12 to 4 p.m. except Tuesdays.  YES!   • McMichael High football players rallied around teammate Camen Mizelle after he was seriously injured in a car accident on Wednesday while returning from classes at Rockingham Community College—neighbors hope he recovers soon.  WFMY News 2

  • A federal government shutdown may delay SNAP, WIC and veterans benefits — leaving about 240,000 North Carolina mothers and young children and over a million others in limbo until funding resumes.  News & Record
  • Guilford County residents Bronni VanDerwerker, Billy Queen and Inga Koujak urged county leaders to lower the expected tax burden that will follow next year's revaluation—hoping to protect local residents from higher costs.  News & Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Triad cancer center received 100 handmade quilts that were given to patients to boost their comfort. Hospital officials said the quilts were greatly appreciated — a gesture that supports patient care.  WFMY News 2

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a 42 to 13 loss to New England, Panthers coach Dave Canales said the team’s struggle to execute and create big plays was clear—he expects receiver Legette to return this week after missing time with a hamstring injury.
