CRIME NEWS

  • A 16-year-old student was arrested after police found a loaded handgun wrapped in a sweatshirt at High Point Central around 8:55 a.m.—the school locked down immediately—and the youth now faces charges for possession of a firearm on educational property, carrying a concealed gun, and possession of a handgun by a minor.  ABC45
  • A High Point Central student was arrested on August 28 after a school resource officer found a loaded handgun in his bookbag during a weapons scan— the campus was locked down briefly and the student now faces charges.  ABC45
  • Police said a High Point Central student was charged after a loaded gun in his backpack set off a weapon-detection scanner upon entering the building—students and parents reacted to the incident.  WFMY News 2
  • A High Point Central student brought a loaded gun to school one day after a gunman opened fire at a Minneapolis Catholic school—killing 2 children and injuring 17 others.  News & Record

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local leaders met at the State of Our Community luncheon as JetZero president Dan Da Silva explained the company will build a $4.7-billion factory at Piedmont Triad International Airport that will break ground in 2026—bringing 14,500 jobs to Greensboro; he encouraged young people to apply for positions in factory work and STEM fields.  WXII 12
  • In July, the Triad jobless rate dropped slightly to 4.1% as the labor force grew by 4,900 to 817,016—an adjustment that brought 896 fewer people as unemployed, according to the N.C. Commerce Department. Several manufacturing firms, including PVH and FedEx, also announced upcoming layoffs that will affect hundreds of local jobs.  News & Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Labor recovered $2.5 million in unpaid wages after investigating 1,600 complaints in 87 counties from July 2024 to June 2025 in retail, restaurants, construction, medical, and transportation. Commissioner Farley said the funds help workers pay for essentials like rent and school supplies — and he will investigate any new wage discrepancies reported.  ABC45
