COMMUNITY NEWS

  • High Point University freshmen built 150 bikes for local elementary students during a team-building exercise and donated them as a surprise gift—students also taught the kids how to ride. Organizers said the event helped build relationships with local youth.  WXII 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Erin remains a major storm and is turning north while forecast to bring high surf — dangerous rip currents and coastal erosion to NC beaches by midweek. It is expected to regain strength to Category 4 as it passes offshore, and residents are advised to watch for updates.  WXII 12
  • Growing High Point will use $64,000 from Honda to give away free 10-pound compost boxes with instructions on turning food scraps into soil — the boxes will be available at the High Point Farmers Market each Saturday and delivered to seniors each Tuesday, with waste composted at East Russell Street.  WXII 12

  • The Guilford County Sheriff's Office held a backpack giveaway—families chose from over 1,000 free backpacks for the school year—to help students prepare for class.  WFMY News 2
