EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six extended-year schools in Guilford County started on Aug. 5 and seven additional schools are opening today; most students will return on Aug. 25. Parents should check school attendance and dress code policies as well as the new cellphone ban—along with details on free breakfast and lunch.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of High Point announced an eight-week civic engagement program called High Point 101 to connect residents with local government through hands-on learning and meaningful dialogue. Participants must attend the first session, weekly sessions from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and one City Council meeting, and eligible residents aged 18 and older can apply until August 11.  ABC45

HEALTH NEWS

  • Most State Health Plan participants (excluding Medicare recipients) will become eligible in October for a no-cost surgical benefit offered through a new partnership with Lantern and its network of surgeons serving the Triad, Charlotte and Hickory. The benefit will cover about 1,500 orthopedic procedures, including knee and shoulder surgeries, and aims to give better care while cutting costs for roughly 550,000 members.  News & Record
  • Guilford County health officials confirmed a fox on Forbes Drive tested positive for rabies on August 4, marking the fifth case this year—residents are urged to ensure their pets are vaccinated and avoid contact with wild animals.  ABC45
