- ➤ The family of 23-year-old Matthew Bauer is asking for more beach safety after he drowned at Holden Beach when a rescue began Monday at 3 p.m. and he was found on Wednesday; they will hold a celebration of life Saturday at Stokesdale Park at 5 p.m. with community members bringing sports gear for Title 1 schools—calling for more warning signs and red flags. - ➤ Rockingham County deputies received a call just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday about a 45-year-old man shot on the 5200 block of N.C. 135 in Stoneville and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen who was taken to the hospital to recover; deputies later arrested 24-year-old James Brittain (24) and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon and discharge of a weapon in occupied property, with a court date set for June 23. Senate fast-tracked a bipartisan bill to ban hemp-derived products containing Delta 8 and Delta 9 from anyone under age 21 and from public school campuses—lawmakers set rules for packaging, testing and penalties, and the bill is set to take effect at the start of the 2025-26 school year if approved.
