- ➤ Carl Reddeck Jr., a High Point native who lied about his age to join the Marines on May 28, 1942 and fought at Guadalcanal, was killed on Guam on July 21, 1944. - ➤ 25-year-old Jaylen Sawyer was charged after firing shots at troopers on I-85 in Randolph County on May 15 when his actions endangered a woman; he was released from Moses Cone Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, made his first court appearance on Wednesday, and is now in custody at Guilford County Jail under no bond + he faces charges including assault on law enforcement, possessing a firearm by a felon, and impaired driving. - ➤ Guilford County deputies reported on Tuesday that Jaylen Deshawn-Matthew Sawyer was taken into custody after his discharge from Moses Cone Hospital, faces charges for a May 15 incident on Interstate 85 in Archdale, and had an initial court appearance on Wednesday—he remains without bond at Guilford County Jail. - ➤ On May 10, a new historical marker was dedicated near East Fork and Penny roads to honor the Village of Florence, founded in the 1840s by mixed-race abolitionists who opposed slavery—its inscription notes early shops, schools, and community efforts.
