  • Greensboro native DJ Reader is hosting the 3rd Annual Toast to Education gala at Congdon Yards in High Point on May 17 from 6-10 p.m. to benefit the A Son Never Forgets Foundation, and former NFL & MLB star Brian Jordan will keynote while dinner, live music & silent auctions are on offer.  YES! EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers from Winston-Salem State and other UNC system universities in the Triad and northwest NC received part of a $13.6 million NCInnovation grant to help turn research into consumer products. The projects include a portable arthrometer for testing knee looseness developed by N.C. A&T and a virtual reality platform for nurse training at Winston-Salem State — efforts aimed at addressing key challenges in health and agriculture.  News & Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The High Point Police Department hired Skyler Byerley as a police wellness coordinator less than two months ago to boost the physical and mental health of officers and staff—she leads workout classes and is developing an app to help track nutrition and exercise. She will also direct them to confidential annual psychologist sessions from The FMRT Group—an effort to support wellbeing in high-stress work conditions.  WXII 12
  • Guil-Rand Fire Department said they are working with the State Highway Patrol as a heavy police presence has closed Interstate 85 from mile marker 113 — 106, so drivers should avoid the area until more details are known.  WXII 12
