- ➤ Joe Crews, a US Navy veteran, shared his story during Military Appreciation Month, recalling his 26 years of service from boot camp in 1979 to his role after the September 11 attacks and during Desert Storm—emphasizing the lessons of bravery and fairness he learned along the way. - ➤ High Point officials will unveil a Florence historical marker at the corner of Penny and East Fork roads on May 10 at 10 a.m., and an A Moment In Time meeting with a balloon theme will be held on May 20 at Jamestown United Methodist Church for people with dementia and their care partners. Last week, the Jamestown Business Association held a networking meeting to plan a family fun fall festival set for Oct 12, and local residents honored firefighters memorialized on May 3 — May 4 during the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Weekend. - ➤ Today, High Point hosted the Gelato Festival World Masters semifinals at Carpigiani North America headquarters off Gallimore Dairy Road, where 24 chefs from across North America prepared unique flavors for a panel of judges. Toronto chef Gisella Zomparelli Chung showcased her Dubai Chocolate flavor and Missouri chef Tassia Vincentin Rezende won the top spot — five finalists will advance to the North American finals in Los Angeles in August. - ➤ Today, TSA began checking for the REAL ID star on driver licenses at airport checkpoints, which slowed lines at Piedmont Triad International Airport and caused long waits at local DMV offices in High Point—travelers without compliant IDs face extra screening while those with passports, military IDs, or under 18 can still fly. Officials report that over half of eligible North Carolinians have obtained a REAL ID and most travelers already comply, so those planning to fly have time to update their IDs if needed. ABC45
- ➤ The Eden retirement community in High Point received state approval for a $9 million State Revolving Fund loan to replace an aging aeration basin and update its wastewater treatment system—this loan will help the facility upgrade its operations. News & Record
