ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, a house fire on Barbee Avenue in High Point led a man to use his Life Alert pendant when his chair caught fire — 18 fire crews and 49 personnel battled the blaze for 25 minutes — leaving him dead and a woman critically injured with damage estimated at $75,000.  WFMY News 2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, High Point launched a new microtransit service that offers door-to-door rides in the northwest part of town — the fare is $2.50 and rides are available weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; the city plans to expand the service area as more residents use the program.  ABC45
  • The North Carolina Department of Revenue announced that residents in 39 counties affected by Hurricane Helene can file their taxes by May 1 without incurring extra interest—this extension comes from a new law passed to help disaster areas. Officials noted that residents in 61 other counties had to file by April 15 or they faced accruing interest—electronic filing is recommended.  ABC45
  • North Carolina lawmakers are considering House Bill 125 to name the Moravian star the official state star. The bill—if passed—will add the star to state symbols and honor its long history in our community.  WXII 12

  • High Point Police Department stands with officer Nick Coleman—25—after his recent diagnosis with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. The department is organizing support as his treatment begins.  WFMY News 2

SPORTS NEWS

  • High Point men's basketball team formally introduced Flynn Clayman as its new head coach on Tuesday after coach Alan Huss left for Creighton. Clayman served as associate head coach for the past two seasons and led Southern Utah to a 24 to 13 record in one season while helping build a top five national offense.  WFMY News 2
