Good morning, High Point. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 23rd of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jim Longworth hosted Triad Today as he and guests discussed Big Brothers, Big Sisters, esports, and foundation grants to support local nonprofits. The show offered community insights for High Point viewers.  WFMY News 2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The NWS explained that freezing rain occurs when raindrops freeze on contact because the cold air layer is thin (coating roads and trees), while sleet forms as frozen pellets when the cold layer is thicker. This explanation helps residents prepare for slippery conditions during a weekend winter storm.  WXII 12
  • A weekend winter storm will bring arctic cold air, sleet and freezing rain starting Saturday evening, causing hazardous travel conditions and power outages across the Triad. The storm’s strong winds and ice accumulation are expected to worsen overnight Sunday.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Stein and state officials warned that a major winter storm will hit later this weekend — residents should check supplies and update emergency plans.  WFMY News 2
