  • High Point is building a new senior center that will offer multiple services for older adults and the public when it opens — construction is on schedule.  The High Point Enterprise
  • Firefighters rescued a stray cat stuck on top of a building with a Doritos bag covering its head at a new construction site in Guilford County; the cat (dubbed Battalion Chief Dorito) is safe at the shelter and will be listed for adoption soon.  WXII 12
  • The Oakwood Day Center in High Point now acts as a warming center on freezing nights while offering hot meals, showers, haircuts+ and computer access for those in need. Founded by Bishop Kevin Sanders and his wife, Ericka, it welcomes women with children and single women when shelters are full.  WXII 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • North Carolina inspectors cited a Sunoco station on Randolph Road after drivers reported contaminated fuel — tests confirmed phase separation in two pumps.  WFMY News 2

CULTURE NEWS

  • High Point marks MLK Day with a family-friendly parade on Jan. 18 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of W. High and S. Main Street and a worship service on Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at High Point University’s Hayworth Chapel.  WXII 12
  • A group of North Carolina monks will visit the Piedmont Triad soon — event details are yet to be finalized — to share their traditions with local residents.  WFMY News 2

  • Betty Middleton from Stokesdale won $1 million from the NC Education Lottery when she purchased a $30 MAX-A-MILLION ticket from Petro 158 on N.C. 68 North; she opted for a $600,000 lump sum payout (net $432,068 after taxes).  WFMY News 2
